D5 Midgets Only Barnstable Team to Win as Bridgewater Sweeps Division 1
BRIDGEWATER — The Division 1 Midget Barnstable Silver Bullets stayed tight to their unbeaten Bridgewater hosts last Sunday, taking an 8-6 score into the third quarter, but in the end the Barnstable boys simply got worn out. The final tally was 24-6.
Turnovers and poor offensive execution throughout the game by Barnstable essentially hamstrung a defense that gave the best effort it possibly could versus the top team in the league. Bridgewater ups its records to 7-0 on the season while Barnstable remains in second place at 5-2.
Barnstable faces Y-D this Sunday (Oct. 28) at Allan Carlsen Field in South Yarmouth.
Barnstable running back Rufus Hamilton collected 90 yards rushing on the day on four carries, including runs of 23 and 65 yards, the latter of the two long runs being a touchdown score.
Bridgewater shut down the usually prolific Barnstable fullback Damian Johnson, however. Coming off a 173-all-purpose yards performance last week versus Plymouth, Johnson was held to 10 yards on five carries versus Bridgewater and had one kick return of 16 yards.
Quarterback DJ Crook had a pair of nice first-down runs on botched punt plays, but his cumulative rushing yardage on the day was negated by a pair of sacks for deep losses. He went 4-9 passing for 39 yards with one interception.
Defensively, middle linebacker Everett Walsh turned in a game- and season-high 12.0 tackles (10 solo, 4 assisted), followed by Zach
Stevens (6.5 tackles, 6 solo, 1 assisted), Sam Holway (4.5 tackles, 4 solo, 1 assisted), DJ Crook (5.0 tackles, 4 solo, 2 assisted), Jeremy Hatstat (2.0 tackles), Johnson (1.0 tackles, both assisted), Chris Lawler (1.5 tackles), Matt Lounsbury (1.0 tackles), Kevin Hardy (1.0 tackles), Rufus Hamilton (1.0 tackles) and Tevin Hill (1.0 tackles).
Division 1 Pee Wees Fall, 12-6
The Division 1 Pee Wees came into the Bridgewater match-up at 5-1 and seemingly fully prepared for anything the 1-4-1 Badgers had to offer, but Bridgewater opened up a passing attack on Barnstable’s secondary that had the Silver Bullets left scratching their collective heads. Quarterback Hayden Murphy had Barnstable’s lone score of the day,. Darien Kaski had a solid day running the ball and gained close to 75 yards.
Defensively, linebackers Max Lambert, Marcus Cunningham and Conor Walsh each turned in five tackles while Patrick Thompson and Lee Hickey added a solid day on the front line. Cornerbacks Derek Estes and John Hardy played well, but Bridgewater keyed in on the deep secondary.
Silver Bullets Roundup:
— The Division 1 Mites fell, 16-0, in spite of solid efforts on offense by Nathan Balthazard, Tyler Shibles and quarterback Ethan Chasson. Three times the Bullets were poised to score but three times Chasson went down with injuries and the Bullets’ drives faultered... The D5 Midgets beat Marshfield, 24-6... The D5 Mites fell, 22-0 and the D5 Pee Wees fell, 6-0.
