Silver
Bullets Hit Marshfield Hard for Super
Bowl Title
First
Quarter
Things began just the way Barnstable
wanted them to in the Division 1 Pee Wees Super Bowl Sunday afternoon
versus Marshfield.
First-year Silver Bullet Willie Fogarty
made a tremendous hit on the opening kick-off, leaving Marshfield on
its own 25-yard line. Nick Vellutti then followed suit with a tremendous
sack, but in its haste to put the hammer down on the Marshfield offense,
the Barnstable defense was called offsides. Marshfield chipped away
at Barnstable on the ensuing three plays, giving it a first down.
On 1st and 10 from the 40, Tim Galvin
and Vellutti then converged upon the
Marshfield
ball carrier, stopping him dead in his tracks. With 5:08 remaining and
facing 2nd and 10, Marshfield then picked up 20 yards for another Marshfield
first down. Had it not been for Isaiah Voegeli, Marshfield very well
might have scored on that run.
On the ensuing play, Voegeli and William Stewart combined to lay out
the Marshfield ball carrier, bringing up 2nd and 5. Defensive end Blake
Blaze and Voegeli then combined to give Marshfield nary an inch. With
2:53 remaining in the quarter, Blaze once more hammered the ball carrier,
this time leaving him shy of a first down. Marshfield faced 4th and
1, deep in Barnstable territory. The Silver Bullet defense was not willing
to concede that final yard and as the Marshfield ball carrier attempted
to cross it he was met full force by a sea of silver helmets. Barnstable
had regained possession of the ball on its own 24-yard line with 2:00
remaining in the first quarter.
Alex Thome took the ball first, but could
not break free, bringing up 2nd and 10. Voegeli then called for the
shotgun formation and bolted like lightning to the outside for a gain
of 15 yards and a Barnstable first down with 0:59 on the clock.
Barnstable was then called on a motion penalty, making 1st and 15. Voegeli
took the ball again, this time gaining only three to make it 2nd and
12 and time on the first stanza expired.
Second
Quarter
Brett Sullivan, who ran the ball exceptionally
well and hard throughout the afternoon, took the ball next and gained
six yards to make it 3rd and 6. Voegeli made it happen on the ensuing
play, bursting for a gain of 7 yards and a Silver Bullet first down
smack dab on the 50-yard line.
Enter Sullivan once more for a gain of
7 yards to bring up 2nd and 3, but in a rare instance of a referee calling
a personal foul on the offense, Barnstable
was hit with a 15-yard penalty to
make it 1st and 25. Voegeli gained five yards on the ensuing play to
make it 2nd and 20 but something had happened to Barnstable
’s momentum. On 3rd and 20 with 5:22
till halftime, the Bullets fumbled
(and recovered it) to make it 3rd and 20. Voegeli opted to launch it
deep to a streaking Nick Kidd, but the pass fell incomplete. On 4th
and 20, the Bullets were forced to kick and Marshfield
wound up on its own 25 with 4:27
to go in the half.
Blaze, who had an exceptional game, dropped
the Marshfield
ball carrier for a 12-yard loss to leave it at 2nd and 22 from the 13-yad
line. Almost desperate, Marshfield
attempted a reverse only to have
it broken up by Stewart who caused a fumble. Marshfield
recovered the ball but now found
itself with an insurmountable 3rd and 33. On the ensuing play. Marshfield
fumbled once more, leaving it with
no other choice but to punt on 4th and 34.
Voegeli dropped back to receive the kick
and almost as if scripted from a Hollywood
drama, the ball went directly to
him, he caught it and blazed 20 yards into the end zone and a 6-0 Barnstable
lead. The two-point PAT was fumbled,
but Barnstable
led, 6-0.
Marshfield
put a scare into the Big Red Machine on the ensuing kickoff as it returned
Voegeli’s kickoff 60 yards before the ball carrier was brought down
by Voegeli on the 18. Ben Cohen and Stewart then combined to hammer
the Marshfield
ball carrier for no gain, making it 2nd and 10 on the Barnstable
18. Cohen and Voegeli then combined
on the next play, giving the Marshfield
ball carrier just two yards and making
it 3rd and 8 from the 16 with 1:11
remaining. On the next play, Cohen
again hit the Marshfield
ball carrier hard, causing him to fumble and a quick-thinking Mike Kullas
pounced on it. Barnstable
had regained possession on its own 23 with 0:42 left in the half.
On 1st and 10, Voegeli ran into a sea
of purple only to somehow break free and gain an amazing five yards.
On 2nd and 5 on its own 28, Voegeli then picked up 12 yards and a first
down to stop the clock with 0:14 left in the half.
An incomplete pass to Sullivan and then an Alex Thome five-yard gain
ate up the remainder of the clock, but Barnstable
went into halftime with a 6-0 lead
and momentum.
Third
Quarter
And momentum is precisely what Sullivan felt as he returned the opening
kickoff 38 yards to the Marshfield
28. Thome followed quickly on 1st
and 10 with a four-yard run to make it 2nd and 6 on the 24. Sullivan
then picked up a gain of nine to for a first down and the ball on the
13. Barnstable
was rearing for another score. Thome took the rock but was met with
fierce opposition to bring up 2nd and 10 and then an errant sweep pitch
made it 3rd and 15. Suddenly, Barnstable
seemed to lose its momentum. A Voegeli
bootleg was stopped for a loss of five, bringing up 4th and 20. Barnstable
opted to go for it, but the deep
pass to Kidd was broken up. With 3:41
remaining in the quarter, Marshfield
regained possession.
Galvin landed a tremendous hit on the
Marshfield
ball carrier on the ensuing 1st and 10 play, and another stop made it
3rd and five. Blaze came through in the clutch once more for a tremendous
sack, causing Marshfield
to fumble. Recovering the loose ball, Barnstable
now found itself quickly back in
the driver’s seat on the Marshfield
25-yard line with 2:13
to go.
Enter Luke McGuinness who busted through
for a fantastic gain of 20 yards to put the ball on the five-yard line
for a first and goal situation. An ensuing three-yard run put Barnstable
so close it could taste another touchdown
but on 2nd and goal it fumbled and Marshfield
recovered. There was 0:39 remaining
in the third quarter.
On 1st and 10, Marshfield
picked up six yards, bringing up 2nd and 4. Cohen landed yet another
great hit for no gain, bringing up 3rd and 4 and time on the third quarter
expired.
Fourth
Quarter
On the ensuing play, a host of Barnstable
defenders stuffed the Marshfield ball carrier, leaving the Silver
Bullet opponent in a precarious 4th and 3 situation with no choice
but to go for it.
Again, Blaze stepped into the breach
slamming the quarterback’s arm as he dropped back and causing him
to fumble it. Alexander Pernick picked the ball up and came within
two yards of punching it in for a touchdown, but regardless, Barnstable
had succeeded once more
in staging a defensive stand that offered Marshfield
little if any room to
succeed.
McGuinness took the ball on 1st and
goal and drove it home, sealing Barnstable
’s fate by giving it
a 12-0 lead with 6:57
remaining in the contest.
On the two-point PAT, Kidd was wide open in the end zone but the pass
fell short.
Wanting to ensure it indeed had a pending
victory in hand, Barnstable
booted it to shallow
rightfield, and this time Kidd came up heroically, recovering the
kickoff to give Barnstable
possession at the Marshfield
41. Barnstable
was poised to chew up
as much of the time on the clock that remained.
With 6:28
remaining in the ballgame,
Sullivan picked up a gain of three to bring up 2nd and 7, followed
immediately by a five yard McGuinness gain to make it 3rd and 2. Voegeli
notched the first down with a nice 15-yard jaunt to the 25 yard-line
and things began to look exceptionally good if not perfect for the
Silver Bullets.
Voegeli took a tough hit, though, and Kullas had to step in momentarily
to take over quarterbacking duties. Kullas handed the ball off to
McGuiness who gained three yards to make it 2nd and 7 f\with 4:20
on the clock. Thome
found no room to breathe on the next carry, bring up 3rd and 7. Recuperated,
Voegeli returned with 3:19
on the clock and handed
it to McGuiness once more to make it 4th and 3 with 2:32
remaining. Wide open
once again, the pass fell short to Kidd and Marshfield
took over. With 1:58
remaining, it was too
little, too late for Marshfield
.
Stewart emphasized the obvious with
a tremendous sack to cause yet another Marshfield
fumble, this time recovered
by Kullas with 1:50
to go. With no timeouts left, the clock ticked down on Marshfield
’s hopes. Barnstable
had collected its second
Super Bowl trophy of the day. Game balls were awarded to Kullas and
Andrew McAteer.
McAteer, who was injured prior to the game,
was credited with helping turn the Pee Wees' season around after a
rough 1-3 start.
