Marshfield Rolls over D5 Pee Wees, 16-0, in Season Opener

The Barnstable Silver Bullets Division 5 Pee Wees fell hard to visitor Marshfield last Saturday night (Sept. 11) at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field, 16-0, to open the 2004 season.

If not for mistakes made on a beautiful, 32-yard punt by Devin Broadley with 2:10 remaining in the first quarter, and three fumbles in the Red Zone by Barnstable , the score may very well have gone the other way for the boys in Silver & Red. The Silver Bullets also wasted a beautiful 62-yard touchdown run by quarterback Daman Blake when the score was called back on a holding penalty in the second quarter.

The defensive standout in the game included defensive tackle Zach Stevens who collected 8 solo tackles in the game. Other Barnstable players with multiple tackles in the game included defensive end Everett Walsh (4), middle linebacker Cam Crocker (3), cornerback Kevin Hardy (2), Alex Grove (2), Ryan Desmond, Cam LaRiviere (2), Broadley (2), and Daman Blake (2).

Theo France played brilliantly at running back for the Silver Bullets, collecting 103 yards total in the game. Blake’s sole pass attempt (1-1) was completed for a gain of five yards to Walsh.

Stevens was so effective from his slot at defensive tackle, he caused a Marshfield fumble with 3:50 remaining in the third quarter and it was recovered by Rob Dombrowski. The play set up a beautiful 25-yard run by France but Barnstable fumbled the ball at the 30-yard line and Marshfield recovered with 0:12 remaining in the third quarter.

Broadley and LaRiviere both sustained injuries in the first quarter but were gutsy enough to return to the game later on.

The Silver Bullets head to Hanover next Sunday for a 2:30 p.m. game.
