Bullets Founding Organizer Sadly Passes Away |
| WEST PALM BEACH, FL — Mike Zikas, one of the founding
organizers of Barnstable Youth Football and its Barnstable Silver Bullets,
died unexpectedly Monday (Jan. 26, 2004) due to a sudden illness. He was
53.
Memorial donations in Coach Zikas's name may be made to the Barnstable Silver Bullets Youth Football Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 656, Centerville, MA 02632. A 1972 7th Round Draft pick (177th overall) of the New York Giants, Coach Zikas played collegiate football at the University of Notre Dame. He was a star-defensive tackle for famed Irish Head Coach Ara Parseghian's 10-1 team in 1970 and was a varsity letterman in 1969, '70 and '71. All totalled, the Irish teams Coach Zikas played for were 26-5-1 during his three years alternating at DT with Mike Kadish (Buffalo Bills). In addition to coaching in the Silver Bullets' program at its onset, Coach Zikas was an assistant coach in 1995 for the Barnstable High School Red Raiders during the team's 11-0, Super Bowl Championship campaign. Born and raised in the Chicago, IL area, Coach Zikas lived in Centerville until recently, when he relocated to West Palm Beach, FL. He is survived by his wife Karol and his two daughters, Kristin and Karolyn, both former outstanding athletes and graduates of Barnstable High School. |
