Division Leading Plymouth Too Much for Bullets
October 12, 2008
The Plymouth Jaguar Pee Wee squad came to Barnstable hoping to improve upon its league-leading record, and did so at the expense of the Silver Bullets. Barnstable won the toss at home and elected to receive the opening kick, Ryan Leonovich (7) ran for 6 yards in that first drive, but the Bullets turned over the ball on downs. Plymouth had trouble against Barnstable's defense early as they committed a false-start penalty on first down and tried to make up the yardage by throwing a 12-yard pass. Sonny Bisazza (34) read the play perfectly, cut in front of the receiver, and tallied the team’s first interception of the season, running 15 yards before being brought down in Plymouth territory. The Silver Bullet offense ran onto the field, but was forced to punt after virtually going nowhere on their early second chance. Brendan Bindig (2) punted for 30 yards and Plymouth began a more successful drive, showing the crowd why they were in first place.
The Jaguars mixed run plays in with passes but focused primarily on #32 when a big play was needed. He ran through the middle and around the end as Plymouth marched downfield, converting two first downs and scoring the games first touchdown, despite great defensive efforts by Jack Papatti (44), in on three tackles during the drive, and Tavian Miranda (25) who figured in two stops. The Jaguars gained two more points as they threw into the end zone capping the drive and taking an early 8-0 lead.
Plymouth’s kick-off went out of bounds and Barnstable tried to mix things up sending Tristan Blaisdell through the line for two yards then passing for another couple as Bo Delaney hit Colton Bergal in stride as he crossed the line of scrimmage. The drive was stopped there, unfortunately, and Plymouth took over after Barnstable couldn’t convert. Barnstable’s defense looked promising, Bo Delaney stopped the Jaguars on first down and Donny Mach (55) crushed a Plymouth back before he could reach the line, Colton Bergal gave the fans hope with an incredible third down stop but on fourth down Plymouth handed off to their top back and all watched as #32 ran around the end and downfield stopping only for the whistle signaling a score. Plymouth also converted the extra point attempt stretching their lead to 16-0.
Barnstable kept possession for most of the second quarter; Leonovich received the kick-off and ran back for seven yards, then added three more up the middle on first down. Charlie DiSimone (32) broke free for fifteen and a first down for the home team. The drive continued as Delaney hit Bergal for a second complete pass and Leonovich ran for another first down. Bo found Brendan Bindig streaking downfield and threw a perfect pass resulting in a first down. With time running out in the first half, the offense rushed into formation but time ran out with end zone a mere 6 yards away.
A rejuvenated Barnstable squad took the field and Bindig kicked a 30-yarder away as DiSimone rushed downfield and smothered the ball carrier. Bindig then wrapped up a Plymouth running back before he could get far, then the Jaguars handed off to their trusted back and he took the ball on a sweep around the left side leaving red jerseys behind as sprinted into the end zone for his third touchdown. The extra point run was good extending the lead to 24-0. The Silver Bullet spirit was still alive even after receiving the kick deep and incurring a false start penalty on first down. Blaisdell and Bindig had trouble on the first two downs, and then Leonovich recovered his own fumble on third at the line of scrimmage. Bo and Brendan then hooked up on fourth and long for a 55-yard pass play leaving the ball on the Jaguars 3 yard line. Di Simone tried to hammer it in but was stopped at the one, and then Delaney took the snap and ran through the line for six much needed points. Charlie Di Simone almost added two more but was stopped just shy of the end zone.
Any hope for a comeback was soon squelched though, Colton Bergal, Jordan Galvin-Jutras and Connor Murphy made great stops against a powerful Plymouth offense But eventually they found a new ball carrier to finish their drive and for once it wasn’t a green #32 jersey in the end zone it was a #1, the same as their rank. Plymouth scored the two-point conversion as well with only a minute left in the quarter. Brendan Bindig handled the kick-off and we saw a few new Barnstable players come in to give the starters a rest. Matt Curtice (6) carried the ball on first down nicely then Blaisdell advanced a few yards. The excitement was not long lived; on the next play Barnstable fumbled, giving the ball back to Plymouth on their 35-yard line.
Although the game seemed out of reach, the fans and players didn’t show it as the defense, led by Peter Chirigotis (64) stopped the favored Jaguars with great tackles by Papatti, Jasiah Owens (50), Kyle Mendes (46), Denver Bergamin (42), Ethan Chasson (9) and Bobby Higgins (22). Even though they allowed two first downs, they stopped Plymouth from getting more than 35 yards up field and the entire defense line it seems was in on every play, especially when they forced the Jaguars to turn the ball over on downs, Connor McPherson (58), Conner Holmes (57) and Chirigotis stuffed a fourth and short yardage play exciting the fans almost as much as at any time during the game. A well deserved round of applause echoed on the field as the defense ran off, and the Bullet offense rushed out to take what would be their last possession. Jake Curtiss (23) got his chance and ran up field for a gain, and then a pitch to Higgins witch looked promising resulted in a personal foul penalty on Plymouth, giving Barnstable a first down. Leonovich ran for a yard and in a game-ending try, Brendan Bindig, with one defender to beat was taken down as time expired. You could never tell the score of this game judging by the enthusiasm of the Bullet players. |
