Scituate Spoils Pee Wee Home Opener
The Silver Bullet Pee Wee squad won the coin toss to start its contest against Scituate October 5 at Leo Shields Field. As the Bullets received the kick, Jake Curtiss (23) had a hard time handling the wet ball and, as he attempted to secure it, a Scituate defender swooped in to steal it away. The Sharks began their opening drive on Barnstable's 39-yard line, and, despite great defensive efforts from Jordan Cannon (1), Joel Bess (60), and Charlie DiSimone (32), Scituate's Geoffrey Stillman (44) ran for a first down and drove through the line and around the secondary for the first score of the game. The Bullets’ defense almost stopped Scituate’s Chris Bearce (32), but failed to keep him out of the end zone.
Barnstable’s Curtiss handled the kick off nicely on a wet field and the Bullets offense went to work. Quarterback Bo Delaney (3) took the snap and handed off to Ryan Leonovich (7) for a short gain. Delaney chose Charlie DiSimone for the next two carries, totaling 5 yards, and Barnstable was facing a fourth down with five yards to go. Jack Papatti (44) took a long snap and kicked a high short punt. The special-teams unit smothered the Scituate receiver and forced him to cough up the ball. Barnstable regained possession and the offense rushed back onto the field. They continued the drive as they started, with Leonovich driving up the middle, this time for 3 yards. DiSimone took sec ond down and ran ahead for 2 yards, then Bo Delaney tried to find a hole as the Scituate defense blitzed on third down taking Bo down in the backfield. Papatti punted a beauty on fourth with less than a minute left in the first quarter. Scituate was able to get through the line, but Tavian Miranda (25) and Delaney wrapped up Bearce for a 4-yard gain. Colby Putnam (70) stopped Scituate’s next play near the line of scrimmage as the first qua
ERrter ended.
Scituate's Stillman ran for a first down to open the second quarter, then safety "Sonny" Bisazza (34) stopped Bearce from breaking free by diving and forcing him out of bounds. Stillman then swept left for his – and Scituate’s – second touchdown, but on the point after-attempt, Joel Bess tracked Keegan Lee and burst through the line, driving Lee back with a resounding hit that could be heard from the practice field. Jordan "Juice" Galvin-Jutras (21) returned he ensuing kickoff 11 yards to give the Bullets decent field position at the 41-yard line. On first down DiSimone ran left, and, thanks to a great block by Bisazza, drove ahead for 5 yards. Leonovich ran for five more and dove ahead for a first down. Bisazza ran for 2 yards to open the next set of downs, and on third down, Delaney connected with Colton Bergal (11) for an 8-yard pass and another Barnstable first down. The drive continued with Leonovich and DiSimone sharing most of the running, Delaney also had a spectacular run as he broke a tackle and stiff-armed another defender nearing the Scituate yard line.
Delaney handed off to Leonivich for 6 yards and a first down at the 2 with almost no time left on the clock. Delaney and the Bullets’ offense ran to the line and Bo spiked the ball, giving time for one last play. As time expired, two defenders broke through and sacked Delaney, giving Scituate a 14-0 lead at the half.
The Silver Bullets kicked off starting the second half and Paul "Biz" Bizinkauskas (54) flew downfield stopping any advance by Scituate’s return team. The Sharks were stopped on first down by Peter Chirigotis (64) and Tavian Miranda for almost no gain and on second down Scituate crossed the line before the snap, drawing a flag. Leonovich and Bess teamed up for a tackle on the next attempt at second. Then Colton Bergal found the answer to Scituate’s #44, as he met Stillman at the line of scrimmage and drove him onto his back for a 2-yard loss. Bergal was in on the tackle for Scituate's failed fourth down conversion attempt. The Bullets introduced Tristan Blaisdell (12) at running back, but his debut did not go as well as hoped as he was stopped for negative yardage on first and second downs. Delaney called his own number and made up 8 yards, but Barnstable turned the ball over on downs after Charlie DiSimone was stopped on fourth down. The Bullets’ defense looked strong, with great plays from Chirigotis, Miranda, Bizinkauskas and Justin Marcantonio (18), but on fourth down, the Sharks handed off to Stillman for a third touchdown run, almost assuring a Scituate victory. A bright spot in a dreary day was provided by Sean Ford (65) as he absolutely stuffed Scituate’s Lee, who attempted the point after with no time left in the third quarter.
Colton’s younger brother Keaton Bergal (33) handled the kick nicely and the final quarter began with a hopeful Bullet offense taking the field. Blaisdell lost 3 on first down, but Leonovich got back 6 then Charlie DiSimone gained 8 and a first down. Bo Delaney handed to Ryan Leonovich and the speedy running back sprinted for 42 yards, leaving the ball on the 4-yard line of Scituate. It's no surprise Delaney handed to #7 on second down and then again on third as Ryan followed DiSimone into the end zone for the Bullets’ first touchdown at home. Delaney handed off to Bisazza and he would ha ve converted the extra points had it not been for one Scituate player grasping Sonny by the ankle as he broke around the left side.
Papatti tried an onside kick and there was a fight for possession. Scituate came away with the ball and a chance to put the game away for good. The Bullet defense was determined not to allow any more scoring and some fresh defensive players came through to stop Scituate’s powerful offense. Ethan Chasson (9), Ben Griffin (24), Ben Floren (88) and especially Jackson Burbic (45) all contributed to stopping Scituate with great tackles, finally it was Bobby Higgins (22) who punctuated a great second half effort by the home team, making a great tackle to end the game. |
