Division
1 Midgets Defeat Hanover, 26-0
The Barnstable Silver Bullets
Division 1 Midgets opened their 2006 campaign with a bang Sunday (Sept.
10) as they dominated the visitors from Hanover, 26-0
The Bullets wasted no time in thrilling
the home crowd as Tim Galvin – who played spectacularly on both
sides of the ball – gathered the opening kickoff, broke to his
left and raced 75 yards to the end zone for a touchdown. The two-point
PAT failed, but Barnstable gained a 6-0 lead it would never relinquish.
The Bullets’ defense established
the tone for the day on Hanover’s first possession. A hard tackle
by James Gomes on third down forced Hanover to punt. It was a scene
often repeated throughout the game as Barnstable’s defense exacted
constant defensive pressure on the Hanover offense.
Noseguard Matt Bonfiglio spent much of the afternoon creating havoc
in Hanover’s backfield. Cornerbacks Gomes and Alex Pernick shut
down any attempts to get outside, while middle linebacker Tim Galvin
raomed from sideline to sideline, unpleasantly greeting Hanover’s
ball carriers.
Unfortunately, for Barnstable, fumbles
stymied the first half offense until near the halftime mark. With 2:24
remaining in the half, Quarterback Doug Crook flipped a little swing
pass to Tim Galvin. Galvin snared the pass, made a sharp diagonal cut,
sliced through the entire Hanover defense and sped off to a 64-yard
touchdown. Crook followed with a pass to slotback Matt Delaney who made
a nice catch for a two-point conversion and the Bullets led, 14-0.
With their opponent on the ropes, the
Bullets then delivered the knockout punch. Galvin boomed the kickoff
into the end zone for a touchback to give Barnstable’s defense
ample room to make something happen. Operating from its own 20, Hanover
appeared to want to run the clock out but Barnstable had other ideas.
Using their time outs and pressing hard on defense, Barnstable forced
Hanover to punt to the Barnstable 44.
With 1:16 left in the half, Doug Crook
went to work. The up-and-coming QB dropped back and fired a perfect
strike to Alex Pernick for a 24-yard gain. Tim Galvin picked up 11 yards
over right tackle, then carried for seven more to the Hanover two-yard
line with the clock winding down.
An illegal motion penalty pushed the
Bullets back to the seven-yard line and the clock resumed with less
than 10 seconds left. Calmly, Crook got his team lined up and the ball
snapped as the clock read 00:01. Crook faked to Galvin and took off
himself on a naked bootleg around the right end and with a tremendous
diving effort, he broke the plane just inside the corner pylon. The
PAT attempt failed, but the Bullets had a well-earned 20-0 lead at halftime.
Alex Pernick finished the day’s scoring early in the fourth period
with a nifty, 29-yard touchdown run behind a nice block by Jonathan
Canon.
The defense continued to dominate throughout the second half and the
offense moved the ball nicely throughout the second half.
Ryan Smith had a fantastic 43-yard run
to the Hanover one-yard line with 3:51 left. Matt Delaney, who quarterbacked
much of the second half, went to his knee on four consecutive plays
near the end of the game.
The stars of the game were Tim Galvin on offense and Matt Bonfiglio
on defense.
